5. Options: Print - Drawing directly onto the plate

For this exercise, I explored using a subtractive monoprinting technique to create tonal values and marks by removing ink from the plate. The aim was to experiment with light and shadow, as well as line and texture, using different tools to lift off ink in creative ways.

My first attempt was to depict a beach scene with a sunbed and a palm tree. I started by inking up the plate evenly and then used a variety of tools to lift the ink off—cotton buds for fine lines, a rag for broader areas, and the end of a paintbrush for details. Unfortunately, this piece didn’t come out as planned. While I managed to create a sense of movement and texture, the composition felt muddled, and the palm tree and sunbed didn’t translate clearly. It’s possible that I overworked the plate or lacked the contrast needed to bring the scene to life. However, I did find the process useful for learning how different tools interact with the ink.

For my second attempt, I switched gears and tried to portray a cruise ship. This time, I approached the process more systematically. I carefully lifted ink to define the ship’s structure, using a piece of card for clean lines and cotton buds for finer details. I also used a dry rag to create softer tones for the background, which helped set the ship apart from its surroundings. This print turned out much better. The ship is more recognisable, and the combination of tonal values and line work gives the piece more depth and contrast. While there’s still room for improvement, this attempt felt much more successful.

This exercise was a great way to explore the potential of subtractive techniques. I enjoyed the challenge of controlling tonal values and creating different types of marks, even though it required a lot of trial and error. Moving forward, I’d like to focus on simplifying my compositions and planning them more carefully before starting. I’m also curious to see how layering different prints or combining this technique with others could expand the possibilities even further. This was definitely a rewarding learning experience, even with its challenges!
